One man is dead, another remains missing and two men were rescued when a boat carrying the four capsized in the mouth of the Colorado River at the Matagorda Jetties Saturday, Nov. 18, the Matagorda County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Deputies sent to the scene saw a shrimp boat near the eastern side of the jetties trying to rescue people that were in the water.
Deputies saw a blue 16-to-18-foot boat overturned in the water near the shrimp boat.
The shrimp boat and its crew rescued two men and then made its way into the river safely where a Texas Parks and Wildlife boat was waiting to receive the rescued men, deputies said.
The two men were identified as Deinier Mena, 30, from Katy, and Mario Herrera, 29, from Baytown, reports show.
Mario Herrera was taken to the Matagorda Regional Medical Center by ambulance, deputies reported.
Mena remained on scene waiting on family to arrive.
Mena told deputies that he and three other men from the Houston area tried to enter the Gulf of Mexico at the river jetties in the boat and realized the water was too rough, so they tried to turn around and head back in.
A large wave capsized the boat and all four men were thrown into the rough waters, deputies were told.
