The Bay City Restaurant Initiative has more than enough signatures to call local option elections in Bay City and Matagorda County to allow the sale of all legal alcoholic beverages.
The petition drive was launched Dec. 5 and secured the state-required signatures of more than 1,300 Bay City voters and 900 Justice Precinct 1 voters signing petitions.
“Bay City and Justice Precinct 1 registered voters overwhelmingly supported calling the election,” said Mitch Thames, Bay City Chamber of Commerce president, and a member of the Bay City Restaurant Initiative.
He added that the election petitions also support equalizing alcohol sales rules for all of Bay City.
The number of signatures submitted far exceeds the state requirement to call the election and the group was able to gather the signatures in less than half the time allowed by state law, Thames added.
