Bay City police and firefighters, above, look over the damage to one of two cars involved in collision that seriously hurt eight people downtown Saturday night, Jan. 13. In photo below, several people, including some of those in the collision, huddle at a corner of 7th and Avenue G, where the wreck occurred.
A car full of people rushing a gunshot victim to Matagorda Regional Medical Center ran a red light and twice struck an SUV at 7th and Avenue G about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Bay City Police said.
Eight people were seriously injured and were taken to MRMC by private car or EMS – six of them were later sent to Houston on Life Flight, police reports show.
Police didn’t respond to requests Tuesday for more information on the accident or for the names of those involved.
The shooting – under sheriff’s department investigation – occurred in a trailer park on Cheyenne Street near Stripes on Texas 35, the Sentinel has learned. Five people plus the gunshot victim were in the car involved in the collision, police said.
Matagorda County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. James Orr said Tuesday that the investigation into the shooting was hampered because several of those involved in the accident, with knowledge of the shooting, had been flown to Houston.
