Steven Reis is Man of the Year and Sue Milberger is Woman of the Year and both were honored at the 95th Bay City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture annual banquet, Jan. 18.
This year’s chamber board chairman Al Capristo put the attendance at about 450, making the event the best attended in the chamber banquet history.
“This is the best yet,” Capristo said.
Outgoing chairman Robert Lister passed the gavel to Capristo during the initial ceremonies.
Capristo also introduced the chamber chair-elect, Joe Hoinkis.
In addition to Reis and Milberger, the banquest also honored:
- Sargent Area Chamber Man of the Year Donald Fox.
- Matagorda Chamber Person of the year Gail Cook.
- Bay City ISD Educator of the year Magda Mirelez.
- Van Vleck ISD Educator of the Year winner Leanne Sliva
- Matagorda ISD Educator of the Year Cecilia Allison.
- Tenaris scholarship award Winner Palacios High School’s Salvador Castillo.
- Bay City ISD Student of the Year Winner Erika Moreno.
- Van Vleck ISD Student of the Year winner Angel Hanzik
Reis is Matagorda County’s District Attorney and has a lengthy list of accomplishments in his community.
He was introduced by last year’s Man of the Year John Dickerson.
Born in 1954 – outside of the U.S., but his family moved to Bay City when he was young – Reis graduated from Bay City High School (BCHS) and earned a journalism degree from Texas A&M University where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets.
Commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force (USAF), Reis served as Electronic Warfare Officer and his missions included Alaska, Greece, Germany, and England. He also worked as an Air Operations Officer in Washington DC.
Reis was discharged in 2005, with the rank of Major.
During his service he received five Air Medals, a Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Joint Services Commendation Medal for his work with the Defense Intelligence Agency.
Dickerson said that when Reis returned to Bay City he ran a finance business and was a realtor for Red Carpet Real Estate, and began law school.
He graduated from South Texas College of Law in Houston and returned to Bay City to begin a private law practice.
Reis is a member of the Bay City Lions Club, the Matagorda County Museum and the Bay City Boys and Girls Club.
