Soil & Water Conservation award winners

   The Matagorda County Soil & Water Conservation District #316 held its Annual Awards Banquet Thursday, Jan. 24. 
   The following winners were recognized:
   2019 Conservation Rancher – Matthew Ashcraft
   2019 Conservation Farmer – Luke Ledwig
   2019 Conservation Teacher – Stacey Goodman (not pictured in group photo)
   2019 Friend of Conservation – William Younger
   2019 Wildlife Conservationist – Matagorda County Birding Nature Center
   This year’s theme for the student Conservation Contests was Dig Deeper: Life in the Soil. 
   Matagorda County SWCD added the coloring contest as a new category this year. The Coloring Contest winners are:
   Honorable Mention – Lila Miles
   4th Place – Derek Gartica
   3rd Place – Catherine Torres
   2nd Place – Aubree Ibarra
   1st Place – Ruger Reed  
   The Essential and Functional Academics Poster Contest winners are:
   Honorable Mention – Lorena Ruvalcaba
   4th Place – Gwendolyn Gee
   3rd Place – Manuel De La Rosa
   2nd Place – Joseph Davis
   1st Place – Rueben Luna
   The top two winners of the Poster Contest for students ages 7-11 will advance to area. The winners are:
   Honorable Mention – Heidi Koenig
   4th Place – Peyton Stall
   3rd Place – Hayden Strange
   2nd Place – Victoria Sliva
   1st Place – Kylee Orsak
   The Junior Essay Contest was open to students ages 12-13, and the top two winners will advance to area. The winners are:
   Honorable Mention – Brenda Garcia
   4th Place – Lacy Smith
   3rd Place – Bailey Hauff
   2nd Place – Karly Brown
   1st Place – Erin Brown.
   Students ages 14-18 participated in the senior essay contest. More than 120 essays were submitted, so the competition was tough. The top two essay winners will advance to area, and the first-place winner will receive a $500 scholarship. 
   The winners are:
   Honorable Mention – Patrick Dubourdieu
   4th Place – Halia Balsemo
   3rd Place – Joyce Hickl
   2nd Place – Emily Medina
   1st Place and the Winner of the $500 scholarship – Hannah Sliva
